"Hey, you can have more time or you can have more money. It’s a choice."

YES! It takes money to make (more) money .. but to get that first bunch of cash in order to invest there is, for most people, only to work for your money. Working for your money is the least efficient way to earn. So it takes a lot of time to do this, 70+ hours per week. Forget that! I'm only going to live once, so I need to LIVE :)

While working no more than 40 hrs/week, what salary do you need in order to live comfortably? In Ontario, not including Toronto, one person needs to make $75K, in my opinion. Then the spouse does not need to work (though working part time is recommended), you have enough for bills, some toys, a vacation every year, a car, a house.

What careers are there, that:
1) do not require advanced degrees (don't want to spend more than 4 years post secondary, yuck!)
2) not asked to work more than 40hrs/week
3) do not require night shifts or working weekends/holidays (except on rare occasions)
4) can net $75K within 5 years of first career out of post secondary (you have to put your dues, sorry)

?

From experience I can say that Engineering meets those requirements. Any job at OPG or Hydro-One. What others are there?

It's all about goals and defining what you want in life. I do want a million dollars, already spent the years getting my post secondary education, and I am willing to work long hours. Why? Because I want to take care of my family and set an example. You have to work long and hard to make it in this life. In addition, poverty is miserable, I know because I have been there. No thanks.

Thanks for your wisdom and inspiration Gail!

About the deathbed thing? Take it from me, LOTS of people who are sick and dying wish they had more money. Medicine, nursing care, even parking, costs a lot, even in Canada.

@Aimme - its great that you're not materialistic, but I think you're missing the motivation behind a lot of the people who want a million bucks.

I would love to have a million dollars, not because my lifestyle would change, but so that I can have a baby and stay at home with him/her. I'm in the process now of saving for my mat leave, and looking into how much daycare costs, and coming to terms with how many hours a day he/she will be in daycare . . . I would love to have enough money that I could give up my job, at least until the kid started full time school.

It's true that a lot of people want lots of money so that they can 'live the high life' and live in a mansion and get manicures every week, or whatever floats their boat. But a lot of people want a lot of money so that they don't have to constantly worry about losing their job and not being able to feed their kids or pay the mortgage/rent.

It's probably true that nobody on their deathbed wishes they had more cash in their bank account, but plenty of people on their deathbed wish they could leave some/more money to their kids, so that their kids don't have to struggle or worry the way they did.

That said, I certainly don't miss the point raised above: earning lots of money takes a lot of hard work and time, so you have to find a balance between making 'enough' and having the life you want. That balance works out to a lot of people who wish they had more money, but aren't willing to work more for it. I count myself among them - obviously, staying home with baby is the exact opposite of working harder to make a higher salary.

I won't be able to stay home with baby and still buy groceries, but I'm not going to be willing to work 90 hours a week and hire a full time nanny to raise my baby. So, balance for me will be working 45-50 hours a week, and paying for daycare. But I still think wistfully about what it would be like to be a millionaire and not have to make that choice.

Those sound like excellent goals, Melaniesd, that's sort of how I feel, too. I want a reasonable amount of security in housing and vehicle, to know I've done what I can as far as health and long term care planning, and have some money to put toward things that really matter to me. I think lack of debt and some emergency savings is more important to me than what me bottom line turns out to be.

I don't feel the need or want to be a Millionaire. Perhaps because it feels unattainable to me. I didn't grow up with money, so I don't expect to have that kind of lifestyle. I would like to be comfortable though - in that I mean having money in the bank for emergencies, be able to drive a safe & reliable car, afford house repairs and maybe travel a little. I would simply like to know I can get through the month without worrying about money.

So what am I doing to help that be a reality? I'm educating myself and working my butt off so I earn promotions at work. If I can move up an income level it would make a world of difference for us as a family. Right now, saving is difficult, we are just getting through a health & employment crisis for DH. Things are turning around. All in good time with hard work & focus.

@ Marlene - I am so sorry for your loss.

I agree with Aimee and those who talk about time and living well. Life is too short and I've seen people taken too early. For me, rather than be wealthy, I'd like to be comfortable. I would rather spend the time with my kids who are at that age where mom is fun and they want to hang out with me - that in my mind makes me wealthy!

It's good timing for me since we have been going back and forth on the idea of moving. Saw a home we loved but it is 465K and double the property taxes we pay now. On the one hand, I'd love something with more space. But then we ask ourselves - do we want to sacrifice our lifestyle? We want our kids to be able to do activities and are hoping to do some travelling.

I think it's a great goal for those who want to be millionaires (go for it!) but for me, I don't want to miss being there for my family because I was busting my butt to make money.
